Self-Esteem & Self-Worth

Self-Esteem & Self-Worth

Self-esteem affects how we think, feel, and behave. It impacts our relationships with others and our relationship with ourselves. We feel confident about our appearance, our intelligence, personality, and our abilities and don’t worry about what other people think of us. It shows the degree to which we have self-respect and believe we deserve respect from others.

Self-esteem affects almost every aspect of our lives. It influences self-care as well as how we allow others to treat and speak to us. Self-esteem influences how we value and communicate our needs, thoughts, and feelings, as well as our personal integrity and ability to achieve our goals. It influences our sense of well-being, parenting style, workplace success, and relationship satisfaction. We don’t value our own opinions, needs, and ideas as much as those of others when we have low self-esteem. We are self-critical and focus on our perceived flaws and weaknesses while ignoring or dismissing our strengths, skill, and success. We make negative comparisons to others whom we believe are more attractive, capable, or successful than we are. We have difficulty accepting negative feedback and maybe risk-averse as a result of our fear of failure.

Someone with a low sense of self-esteem may have some of the following symptoms:

  • Feeling worthless and think they are not good enough
  • Self criticalness and self-doubt
  • Distorted views of yourself and others.
  • Frequent negative thoughts and emotions.
  • Difficulty in starting or completing tasks or pursuing goals.

For these reasons, improving your self-esteem is crucial because it plays an important role in everything you do. Without paying attention to the little things, you should accept and love yourself. Having healthy self-esteem leaves you feeling good about yourself which can help improve the quality of your relationships, work and eventually your mental health.
