Coping with A Break-Up & Divorce

Coping with A Break-Up & Divorce

A breakup or divorce can be one of the most stressful and emotional experiences in life.  Regardless of the circumstances — whether you wanted it or not— the end of a relationship can turn the entire world into a mess and cause all sorts of emotions and unsettling feelings about the situation.

Even if a relationship is no longer healthy, a divorce or breakup can be excruciatingly painful because it represents the loss of not only the partnership but also the memories and responsibilities you shared. Romantic relationships start on a high note of anticipation and optimism for the future. When a relationship fails, we are left with feelings of deep disappointment, emotional pain, and despair.

The pain, disruption, and confusion getting over a breakup or divorce can be difficult and time-consuming. However, it is critical to keep reminding yourself that you can and will overcome this adversity and even move forward with a renewed sense of hope and optimism. Moving on takes a significant amount of time, mental strength, and effort on your part. It is important to find healthy ways to cope with this situation at this time.

There are several ways to cope with a break up:

  • Allow yourself to grieve over the loss of the relationship
  • Reach out to others for support
  • Self-care: taking care of yourself
  • Learning important lessons from a breakup or divorce
